The Correct Order to Apply Makeup, Step by Step

If you have foundation, highlighter and lip gloss on the table and aren’t sure which to apply first, the order that works best is: foundation, then a cream blush, then highlighter, with lips as the final step. The logic isn’t about habit, but texture: cream products blend evenly only on clean or freshly prepped skin, while powder products are designed to set what has already been applied, so if you use them too early, there’s nothing to set.

  • The sequence starts with foundation because a cream product adheres better to a fresh base than to a layer of powder.
  • Cream blush comes right after foundation, while the base is still supple, not at the end over powder.
  • Highlighter comes after blush. Apply it in a thin layer to the high points that catch the light, and build it up with a second brush pass.
  • Lips are the final step. Lip liner can go on before gloss or be worn on its own over the entire lip.

Why the order matters: base first, powder over cream, color last

Liquid and cream products need clean or lightly prepped skin to blend evenly; when applied over a layer of powder, they tend to catch unevenly and leave visible marks instead of melting into the skin. Powder, in turn, is designed to set what is already on the face: loose powder locks in the foundation and concealer underneath, smoothing the appearance of the complexion and reducing the visibility of fine lines. Used in excess, especially in compact form, it can leave a heavy-looking finish instead of a velvety one (source: Face powder – Wikipedia). That’s why it makes sense to move from correction—that is, foundation—to structure—that is, cream blush and highlighter—and only then to lip color: each layer stays visible instead of being disturbed by the one applied after it.

We’re assuming your skin is already prepped for makeup, with a simple routine before foundation. If you want to know exactly what to apply to your face just before this step, prepping your skin before makeup is covered separately as a topic in its own right.

Step 1: foundation, the base for everything else

This first layer starts the sequence because every product that follows is applied in relation to it. The instructions for DIVAZ Foundation 14 recommend applying it with a brush, makeup sponge or fingers, starting at the center of the face and working outward, and building coverage gradually in thin layers: one layer for a natural look, or several layers wherever you want full coverage.

Foundation is the first layer in the sequence; the other products go over it, not the other way around.

How much foundation to apply before the next step

You don’t need to count the layers exactly; the idea is to let each layer settle a little before adding the next. Before moving on to cream blush, give the foundation a moment to set on the skin. Otherwise, the product applied on top may shift it instead of blending with it. If you want to explore the application technique step by step, including pressure, angle and tricky areas of the face, our guide to applying foundation goes into details we’re leaving aside here. And if you’re hesitating between a brush, sponge and fingers for this first step, our comparison of the three tools can help you choose what works with your foundation’s texture.

Step 2: cream blush, while the base is still supple

Right after foundation comes the time for cream blush, applied while the base is still fresh: a cream formula blends into the freshly applied foundation and leaves a finish that looks like part of the skin, not a patch sitting on top of it. Applied later, over a layer of powder, the same formula no longer blends as well and tends to sit on the surface, visibly separate from the rest of the complexion.

A powder version of this blush has a different place in the sequence: apply it after any setting powder, not at this step, because a powder texture behaves more predictably on a surface that’s already powdered than on one that’s still creamy. The order doesn’t depend on which color you choose, but on the product’s form—cream or powder—so it’s worth checking the texture of each product before deciding where it belongs in your routine.

Step 3: highlighter, where and when to apply it

Highlighter usually comes after cream blush, so the glow sits on top of the color, not underneath it. Highlighter is conventionally applied to the bony points of the face that naturally catch the light, such as the cheekbones and brow bone, just below the eyebrow (source: Highlighter (cosmetics) – Wikipedia). The instructions for DIVAZ Highlighter Pearl follow the same placement logic: apply it with a brush to the cheekbones, brow bone, nose and Cupid’s bow, then blend it lightly over liquid foundation in a thin layer for a subtle daytime glow. A second brush pass over the same areas intensifies the effect for an evening look.

Blend Highlighter Pearl over foundation that has already been applied, using a thin layer for a subtle effect or building it up for evening.

How visible the layer of highlighter looks also depends on the finish of the foundation underneath: a more luminous finish reflects light differently from a matte one. If you’re not sure whether you prefer a matte or luminous look, choosing between a matte and a luminous finish can help you decide on the right base for how strong you want the glow on top to be.

Step 4: lips, the final step — lip liner or gloss first?

Lips are the final step in the sequence precisely because they don’t interact with the layers on the rest of the face. If you want a more precise outline, lip liner defines the natural lip line or can extend it by about one millimeter, giving you more control over the shape before you add color or gloss. Right after applying it, you can soften the line slightly with a finger in a few seconds if you prefer a more diffused transition into the rest of the lip. The same liner can also be worn on its own over the entire lip for a more even finish, without adding another layer on top.

Gloss can go straight onto bare lips or over a thin layer of color for more intensity. In practice, this final step is built up in small layers too, just like the foundation at the beginning: first the outline, then color if you want it, and gloss at the end, until you get exactly the level of intensity you want that day.

How to put the sequence into practice

Put together, the sequence has four steps: foundation, cream blush, highlighter, lips. Each step connects to the one before it through texture, not the order in which you bought the products, so you can try this logic with any combination of products you already have at home, even if they’re not exactly the ones described above. If you’re missing a step in the sequence or want to compare shades, the DIVAZ Makeup range is organized by category, while the makeup guide brings together the other articles in the series, from choosing the right undertone to applying foundation step by step.
